Are you or a loved one looking for a substance abuse treatment center in New Jersey? Is this the first time you will be going into rehab, and you are not sure what to expect when you get there? What makes substance abuse treatment centers in New Jersey different for people going to rehab for the first time? To answer these three questions and more, you’ll want to do some research into rehab. We’re here to help you understand the process so you will know what you will be getting into once you are in rehab. Keep reading to find out more.
Detoxing for the first time
If this is your first time going to rehab, you are likely worried about the detox process. Detox is one of the most important aspects of a reliable substance abuse treatment center, especially if you are heavily addicted to drugs or alcohol. You should be aware that a reputable substance abuse facility will have doctors, nurses, and other medical staff on hand at all times to help you during this difficult time. You will never be left alone as you detox.
If you have never successfully detoxed on your own, the first time in rehab may be worrisome. However, you’ll be given medication for the withdrawal symptoms if your body needs it. The doctors will closely monitor you to make sure you are feeling as well as you can while you detox. You’ll also start attending therapy sessions right away, even as you detox. This is important for your well-being, both mentally and physically.
Understand what you’ll be doing
A New Jersey rehab center will make sure your first time in rehab is a good experience. You can expect to adhere to a busy schedule after checking in to the treatment facility. You will attend 12-step meetings, family and group therapy, and one-on-one sessions with an addiction counselor. There may be volunteer work, required reading, and specially-tailored assignments for you to participate in. When you go through the intake process for the first time, you will talk with doctors and therapists about your addiction and any mental health issues you may have. They will put together a treatment schedule that revolves around your specific needs and abilities.
You’ll know what will be expected of you during the day, so don’t avoid rehab because you believe you’ll be forced into activities you don’t want to do. You’ll also have plenty of downtime during the day to relax and work on yourself in your own way.
How therapy will work
Since this will be your first time in rehab, you’ll want to make sure you tell your therapist or counselor everything there is to know about your problem. Don’t just talk about your addiction if you are suffering from a mental health disorder. During the intake process, you will be asked about any underlying mental health conditions that may be contributing to or causing your addiction. This may include PTSD, depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, executive function disorder, and any other mental health conditions you are suffering from. When you are suffering from a mental health disorder and addiction, this is known as a dual diagnosis. Your therapist will discuss both problems with you separately while you are in private therapy.
First-time rehab patients are often nervous about group therapy. However, most find that group therapy is an excellent way to develop new and more effective communication and socialization skills. You’ll develop a better sense of self-awareness when you have the chance to listen to other residents that have the same types of issues as you. It’s an opportunity to get the support you need from peers that understand how you feel as well as give support to those that need it.
You may or may not be involved in family therapy sessions when it is your first rehab stay. If you are, most facilities want you to have a few weeks of rehab under your belt before you talk with your family. The facility you choose will have its own rules and regulations concerning how family therapy sessions are run and who attends. You must be sober when you speak with family members, another reason why you won’t have contact with anyone for a few weeks.
